Dining Table, Cherry - Why A Cherry Wood Dining Room Table is a Good Investment
70A cherry dining table adds warmth and style to any dining room. This beautiful wood has a warmth and richness about it that a lot of woods lack. It features a very attractive grain and it is a wood which darkens over time. There are many choices of dining tables and cherry is a popular choice. It is one of the hardest woods which makes it perfect for furniture that is used as often as a dining table will be. It is hard to scratch or damage in anyway. Cherry wood also makes a dining room very heavy so there is no danger of someone accidentally knocking the table over.
Most of the cherry wood used to build dining tables comes from the United States; most comes from The Appalachian Mountains. Brazilian cherry wood is also used occasionally but it is less available in North America. It is grown in the Brazilian rain forest. It is one of the hardest woods available and weighs approximately 35lbs per cubic foot.
Table will darken
A cherry dining table will darken after exposure to light; if you buy a table made with fresh cherry wood it will be light brown but after a year it will turn a dark red-brown color. This dark wood gives your dining room table a traditional look and it will give your dining room an overall rich and elegant look.
It is very hard to scratch a cherry dining table since the wood is so hard. However, if you do get a scratch on the table top all you have to do is paint the stain with iodine and the scratch will be invisible to the eye.
Important decision
Choosing a dining room table is one of the most important decisions for a home owner to make. You have to take into account what the table will be used for (will it end up collecting all the junk in the house on top?), how often it will be used (will it be used every day or will it just be used when you have company?), how heavy you want your table to be (if you move often or rearrange your furniture often you might want to invest in a lighter wood) and what look you want for your dining room. You should also take into account the colors on your walls and your carpeting; do you really want to redo the entire room just to match the dining table?
Available everywhere
If a cherry wood dining table sounds good to you there are many places to buy them. You can get them made from scratch or you can find them in any number of furniture stores, department stores and even online. Enjoy that beautiful table, it will be around for a long time and will most likely be handed down in your family over the generations.

My aunt has a wonderful cherry table. Great memories of wonderful dinners there!
UW, great hub. I have my Moms cherry wood dining room set. Its only 40 years old but as you say with proper care it will only get better with age.
Thanks for sharing the tip of the iodine, I will try that. The movers got a scratch on the table top when I moved here and its been bugging me.
great hub
regards Zsuzsy

Love good woods. That table in the large pic is "to die for", as it were. I have a beautiful drop leaf cherry table, an antique...I'd say around 120 years old, in mint condition. It's gorgeous...gets better with age. Seems like you and I are on the same page: love Shakespeare/love cherry tables....I just love everything, don't I?:) Thanks UW.
