How to Make the Perfect Martini
There is nothing quite as satisfying as a perfect martini. It not only helps you to relax, drinking one somehow makes you feel more sophisticated and worldly.
When I drink martinis I think of all those cool guys from the 50s and 60s. The Rat Pack, James Bond; they all drank martinis in cool nightclubs. Cool jazz music was playing in the background while couples sat sipping their cocktails and smoking their cigarettes. I sometimes think I was born in the wrong decade. I would so have enjoyed being part of that kind of society.
Gin Martini
My favorite martini is the gin martini. I like the slight sweetness and the natural taste of the gin. Gin reminds me of summer and of happy times.
The best gin in my experience is Bombay Sapphire gin. You can taste all the herbs and spices in Bombay Sapphire gin. Plus it comes in a cool blue bottle. It can be more expensive than other brands of gin but I definitely think it is worth it.
Stirred, not shaken
James Bond preferred that his martinis be shaken not stirred. However, I prefer to stir mine.
The following recipe is for a dry martini, which is the perfect martini in my opinion.
1) Fill a cocktail shaker to the top with ice cubes.
2) Pour an ounce of gin and a splash of vermouth into the cocktail shaker. You can also pour a small amount of vermouth into the shaker, stir it around and then discard the vermouth. This gives the ice a very thin coating of vermouth which just lightly flavors the gin.
3) Stir the mixture with a cocktail stirrer until it is an even cold temperature.
4) Strain the drink into a chilled cocktail glass and add an olive attached to a cocktail stir stick. You can chill a cocktail glass in the freezer or you can fill it with ice and club soda until it is chilled.
Windex
One of my favorite martinis, that is quickly becoming my #1 favorite, is the one that looks like windex. It is a very simple recipe:
2 oz gin or vodka
1 oz blue curacao
A splash of lemon juice
Add the gin and curacao to a chilled cocktail shaker containing ice. Stir the ingredients well, strain into a martini glass. Add a splash of lemon juice or lemon wedge.

Comments
I do not drink martinis myself, but these are reminiscent of the old black and white movies I like to watch, so I know what you mean about the nostalgia and the Rat Pack. Great tutorial for those who enjoy making martinis.
Thanks for the comments. I think there is a lot of nostalgia in the martini. It's definitely what made me try one in the first place.
Great hub, Uninvited! Nothing like a well-made martini, eh? And you're totally right about gin. I like the natural citrus-y after-taste.
I'm surprised you didn't go into all the "new" martinis. You purist, you. I recently tried a chocolate martini. It was good and fun to try, but I didn't want more than one.
Well, this is on the perfect martini :)
I have tried a few. I had a chocolate one once that I liked quite a bit. I also like the martinis made with blue curacao, it looks like you are drinking Windex.
Great Hub
I have never tried a martini
After reading this I will have to try one :)
HubPages Happy Hour! Great addition, HubMobster :)
Not a martini fan, but it would be the perfect drink for some "Frank-at-the-Sands" jazz.
Ahhh! What a way to end a day. A perfect martini in a cocktail glass from the freezer! I'll take mine with a cigarette please. Oh, that's right, I don't smoke anymore. Damn it!
Great hub! I love gin martinis, too! I had a wonderful one prepared (at my request) with Beefeater gin... the bartender did somethingI quite enjoyed... he poured the vermouth in the chilled glass, swirled it around and then poured it out. then shook the gin with ice and poured it in my vermouthed glass. Ingenius, I say!
No bruising the taste of my Gin!
Great hub! You are so right about Sapphire Gin. It is SU-PERB!
I vote for the chocolate martini, but I do like this hub!
I love the sound of the "Windex" cocktail - sounds like the perfect drink for me. I will be sure to try this one very, very soon. Thanks for the recipe.

Beautiful hub about the Perfect Martini! Your recipe is spot on, even though every person has its own favourites, and we could really talk about gin brands and their advantages and different spicy tones without an end of discussion... I loved your words: "I sometimes think I was born in the wrong decade. I would so have enjoyed being part of that kind of society", and I liked that you haven't forgotten to mention the greatest Martini promoter of all times: James Bond - agent 007 of Her Majesty:)
