How to Stop your Cat Meowing at Night

Updated on May 25, 2012

Cat owners love their pets and would not want to live without them. However, it can be quite aggravating if your cat insists on meowing at night, keeping you awake. It can also be very upsetting when you worry about why he is doing it and if there is something wrong with him; not to mention it makes you irritable the next day when you don't get a full nights sleep. Thankfully, my cat has only meowed a couple of times at night but not enough to disturb my sleep.

There are many reasons that cats meow during they night. They want attention, they are hungry, they are lonely, they are aging, they are in heat, they are bored, or they have an underlying health condition. Cats like to have things their way and if they are not happy, they will usually let you know.

Does My Cat Need a Vet?

As with any behavioral problems you might experience with your cat, you must find out from your vet if it is a medical problem that is causing the meowing at night. Once you rule any medical reasons out, you can try and figure out what is causing the meowing behavior and how to stop it.

Is My Cat Lonely?

If you cat is a single cat, he might get lonely when he has no one to play with at night. The best way to solve this is to make sure you give your cat a lot of quality attention during the day. Playing with him will not only satisfy his need for companionship but it will also help to tire him out so he might sleep more during the night. Also, while many people do not agree for a number of different reasons, you can let your cat sleep in the bed with you at night.

Is My Cat Bored?

Cats can get bored easily if there is nothing to stimulate their mind. At night the TV is off, the music is off, it is much quieter outside and there is no one to play with. One solution for this is to make sure you leave out a lot of toys for him to play with during the night; just make sure they are quiet toys or you will still not be sleeping at night.

Is My Cat Hungry?

If your cat is looking for food at night, don't give in and start feeding him. If your cat is meowing at night because he is hungry make sure he gets enough to eat during the day and then put the dishes away out of his reach. If he doesn't see an empty food bowl maybe he won't think about it as much.

Is My Cat Old?

Many older cats get confused at night; their eyesight isn't as good as it was and they can get lost. A solution to this is to put a nightlight in the area where the cat is most likely to be. This will help him see better and will most likely cut down on the meowing at night.

Is My Cat in Heat?

One reason cats meow at night is because they are in heat and looking for a partner. The simple solution to this is to make sure your cat is spayed or neutered; this will calm down their behavior and most likely stop them from meowing at night.

What Breed of Cat is the Noisiest?

Siamese cats are amongst the noisiest cats of all, they have a loud insistent meow that you can't miss or easily ignore. I may not get off the hook so easily with my cat since he is an ocicat, which means he has some Siamese in him.

What if Nothing Helps Stop My Cat from Meowing?

What if you have followed all these tips and nothing helps? Another way you can treat that negative behavior is by either blowing cool air on the cat from a hair dryer or spraying him with a water bottle. If you can, it's suggested that you do this without the cat figuring out where it's coming from. The cat will soon equate the unpleasant feeling with his meowing and will most likely stop.
