Songs of 1967 - The Summer of Love

1967 was called “the summer of love”, it was just before the optimism and hope of the 60’s disintegrated into drugs and violence. Lyndon Johnson was president, the war in Vietnam was very unpopular, and the hippie culture was in full swing.
I’ve chosen 11 songs that I believe are some of the best of that hopeful year. I was going to choose 10 but I could not leave out The Who.
In 1967, I was a 10 year-old living in Scotland. One constant in my life was my transistor radio, it went with me everywhere I went. It was a great time for music and I’m glad I was there to enjoy it originally.
Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit
This song never fails to give me the chills. That is how I know a song is great; I get chills every time I hear it.
Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade of Pale
The song is one of the most perfect songs I have ever heard. More chills. Their debut single.
The Hollies - Carrie Anne
I've always liked the Hollies, they had a fresh, clean sound...and some great music. Graham Nash was in the band up until 1966.
The Beatles - Love is All You Need
I had to include at least one Beatles song, this is one of my favorites. This song is one of the best parts about the movie Love Actually.
The Bee Gees - Massachusetts
I have always loved this song. I am a fan of the Bee Gees but prefer their 1960s music to their disco era.
Jimi Hendrix - Foxy Lady
A classic song from the greatest rock guitarist who ever lived.
Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
These two were such a great team. This was the original version of the song, later recorded by Diana Ross.
The Small Faces - Itchycoo Park
I lived in the UK in 1967, one of the best bands around were the Small Faces. Rod Stewart was a member at one time.
The Lemon Pipers - Green Tambourine
In the UK in 1967 I remember listing to the pirate radio stations such as Radio Caroline and Radio Luxembourg, they played a lot of psychedelic music such as this.
The Turtles - Happy Together
I love, love, love this song. It’s such a happy, sunny song. I saw Flo and Eddie at the Bottom Line in NYC in the 80s and they did this song.
The Who - I Can See For Miles
I clearly remember listing to this song while sitting on a bus with my mother on our way to visit my grandmother. It was raining and the windows of the bus were foggy. I had my trusty transistor radio and my little ear bud. I was 10.

great selection UW. Oh I remember them so well and I always associate that year with Light My Fire. Maybe that is because she did, on the lake, in a canoe, on a hot night in July while we heard that being played on our transistor for the first time. LOL
I can relate to these songs but they make me feel old. Why because I was older than you when these were popular. No, I am not going to tell you how old I was!!! ha!

This was about the time I fell in love with Barry Gibb, loved all these songs but had my first trip to Massachusetts and Boston so it gave it special meaning. Then I saw either his wife or wife to be and she was so gorgeous so a dumb kids gets her heart broken knowing there was no hope, lol. Stupid was sometimes fun, huh?

Nothing like aging us UW. My children gave me the 'Acoustica Spin It Again software' last Christmas. I'm almost done changing all my records and cassettes of the '60 music onto CD's. It's slow going because I'm listening to every track, definitely a lot of fun. A lot of those tunes haven't surfaced in almost 40 years.
Your selection definitely fits in the Best Of list of '67.

Great songs! I was a little older than you in '67 - 15 yrs old. But it's funny, these particular songs were so enduring that I associate them with the whole era of my later teens, and college. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I am a bit young to remember any of these but I am a fan of a lot of what happened in the sixties. And music was really swinging! Great videos! Thanks for a cool hub!

Uninvied, I loved most of these songs, so you can tell how old I am, haha. As much as I love the Jefferson Airplane, I may love the Great Society's version of White Rabbit even more. If you recall, the Great Society was Grace and Gerry Slick's band before the Airplane.

I was only 2 in '67, but the great thing about being the last of 8 is I got a great range of music. I remember all these songs being played in our house from my teenage brothers and sisters. "Happy Together" is my ringtone for my husband and has always been one of my favorites. I always picture Garth from Wayne's World putting his fingers up on his head for "Foxy Lady." "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"... now I will be singing it in my head all night. A Great Hub!!

This is great! I love these music tribute hubs. I was too young to remember 1967, but my friends and I celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Summer of Love in college and listened to all of these old songs all summer long.
What an incredible list. I was eighteen at the time and in love with life. Such an exciting time to live and be in college...thank you for the memories.

What memories these songs bring back. I was in the 7th grade in 1967 and I, too, had my trusty transistor radio with me at tall times. I always listened to it when I went to bed and usually fell asleep listening to these songs. It was such an innocent time when we look back on it. Great hub! Voted up!

Wow! I love most of these songs! I was only five years old in 1967 but I heard the songs during the 70's. The Beatles, Tammy Terrell, The Who, oh my goodness Jimi Hendrix? - love them!
