Top Ten Free Kindle E-books for Children

Updated on June 25, 2012

These books are my personal top ten free Kindle e-books for children; of course, this is my opinion only and yours may differ.

The best purchase I have made recently is my Kindle; it has renewed my love of reading. I am always on the lookout for free ebooks for my Kindle. I have very eclectic tastes and have even downloaded several children's books. I decided to find ten of my favorite children's books which are currently free on Amazon and share those findings.

I have chosen classic children`s books for this article. Mostly, they are books the I remember reading when I was a child; I have fond memories of them all. You may not agree, and if you don`t please let me know in the comments what books you would add or eliminate. The fact that these books are available for free is great and ensures these children will continue to be exposed to these classical books. Some of them are adapted or abridged for younger readers.

Free Kindle E-books for Children

Please keep in mind that all of these books may not be free forever. If do a search on Amazon you will find more current children's books that are available for free; often for only a short period of time. If you know of any more free ebooks for Kindle that you would like to recommend to parents and those of us who are fans of children's literature please mention them in the comments.

Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

While often seen as a "boys book" I think Treasure Island should be read by all children. I remember reading this book as a young girl and really getting excited about it. Yes, I was a bit of a tom-boy and this might not appeal to all girls, but I think they should be exposed to it.

After pirate Long John Silver stays at his mother's inn, young Jim Hawkins is taken on the adventure of a lifetime. The novel is recommended by School Library Journal for children 12 and up; however, I read the book for the first time when I was about 10.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain

My grandmother gave me this book on my 9th birthday. I remember it was a nice hard covered version with an inserted bookmark; I loved the look of that book. I think that is what got me started on loving reading and books.

As the title says, it is the adventures of a boy named Tom Sawyer who lives with his Aunt Polly in Hannibal, Missouri. He and his friends Huckleberry Finn and Becky Thatcher share some of these adventures with him. School Library Journals recommends this book for Grade 5 and up; again it really depends on what level the child reads at.

Black Beauty by Anne Sewell

Another book I read as a pre-teen, don't all girls love to read about horses? I'm not sure if I was introduced to this book in school or if I found it myself at the library.

Black Beauty is the story of a horse named Beauty as told from the horse's point of view. It is sometimes sad, sometimes happy; but it all works out in the end. School Library Journal suggests this book is suitable for Grade 3 and up.

Heidi by Johanna Spyri

I totally loved this book as a child, I still remember parts of the novel today. And, I have a copy on my Kindle. I must have been around 8 or 9 when I first read the book.

Heidi is the story of a young girl who lives with her grandfather in the Swiss Alps and her friendship with Peter. It has its ups and downs, but it all works out in the end. The novel is suggested for children aged 9 and up.

The Happy Prince and Other Tales by Oscar Wilde

While Oscar Wilde is knows for plays such as "The Importance of Being Earnest" and novels such as "The Picture of Dorian Gray." He also wrote some wonderful children's stories and fairy tales that really are timeless.

Oscar Wilde was one of the giants of literature and this book is a great way to introduce yourself to his writings. It is recommended for children aged 7 and up.

Fairy Tales Every Child Should Know

All the best fairy tales are here including:

Tom Thumb
Cinderella
Puss in Boots
Blue Beard
Sleeping Beauty
Jack and the Beanstalk
Little Red Riding Hood

I absolutely adored fairy tales when I was younger; I remember most of them to this day.

This a good book for reading to your children, the formatting might be difficult for children and the table of contents is not clickable.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

This is another book I remember fondly from my childhood; I wanted to be one of those girls. The story was enhanced for me after seeing several movie versions, especially the one with Katherine Hepburn.

It is the story of a family with three girls growing up in New England at the time of the Civil War; their father is a doctor and is away at war. The book is recommended by School Library Journal for grades 7-12.

A Collection of Beatrix Potter Stories

This book contains the following:

The Tale of Peter Rabbit
The Tale of Benjamin Bunny
The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle
The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher
The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck
The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies
The Tale of Two Bad Mice
The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes
The Tale of Mr. Tod
The Tale of Pigling Bland
The Pie and the Patty Pan
The Roly Poly Pudding
The Tale of Ginger and Pickles

It is not illustrated but you can download illustrated Beatrix Potter tales such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit from Gutenburg and add them to your Kindle.

These stories are recommended for children from birth to 5 years old.

Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift

This book is one that can be enjoyed by both children and adult. For children it's just a story about a man who is shipwrecked on an island of little people where he is seen as a giant. For adults there is a lot of social commentary about life and politics during the time of its writing.

The book is recommended by School Library Journal for grades 7 and up.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

I don't remember when I first came upon this book but it is definitely one of the favorite stories of my childhood. By now, everyone has seen at least one movie based on the story but reading the book brings much more pleasure.

It is the story of Alice who accidentally falls down a hole in her family's back yard after seeing a rabbit with a pocket watch scurry into it. The novel is recommended for grade 4 and up.
